As a key member of the IMISCOE Migration Politics and Governance (MigPoG) Standing Committee (SC), the Migration Policy Centre will hold the First Mid-Term Conference on ‘Migration Politics and Governance: Understanding the Relationships’ on 26-27 March 2020 at the European University Institute in Florence.

Call for papers – Deadline: 29 November 2019

Studies on the politics and governance of migration have rarely spoken to each other. Research on migration politics has emphasised the contentious side of the migration issue, e.g. party ideologies and (populist) discourses, native citizens unfavourable attitudes, pro- and anti-immigrant social movements mobilisation and the like. On the contrary, research on governance and public policy has primarily focused on the consensual side, e.g. policy networks managing migration issues at different levels of government, implementation accommodative practices, processes of policy learning and experts’ knowledge etc. Yet, in a context of increasing politicisation of migration, governance and politics need to be thematised as the two facets of the same coin.

The First Mid-Term Conference of the IMISCOE MigPOG Standing Committee particularly encourages and welcomes papers that address empirically and theoretically the link between migration politics and governance, including contributions:

• • On different migration issues, e.g. immigration, emigration, border control, integration, asylum seekers and refugees etc.;
• • Taking different methodological approaches, i.e. quantitative, qualitative, mix-methods;
• • Adopting different disciplinary perspectives: political science, policy studies, electoral studies, political sociology, political psychology, geography, international relations, social movement studies etc.
• • Considering different geographical areas, relations within regions and levels of government/governance. More specifically, we welcome papers paying attention to migration politics and policies elaborated 1) within the EU context in a global perspective, including the external dimension of European and national migration policies and politics, and the international mobilisation of local authorities; 2) beyond the EU, therefore developed at different territorial scales in receiving/transit countries and at a global and international level (e.g. multilateralism, international organisations etc.).

To propose a paper, please send an abstract by November 29th 2019, to fieri@fieri.it. Abstracts should be max. 500 words long and provide some specification of the paper’s theoretical and methodological approach as well as contribution to the literature. Accepted papers will be notified by December 16th, 2019.
