Migration is one of the most important and divisive issues in Europe today and seems almost certain to dominate political debate in the run-up to the 2019 European Parliament elections. This event will bring together academics, polling experts, and European policy makers, to discuss key divides in Europe – between East and West, North and South, younger and older people, the political left and right – to consider the implications of these divisions for migration policy and the wider politics of migration.
The panel discussion is coordinated by the Migration Policy Centre of the European University Institute and its Observatory of Public Attitudes to Migration (OPAM). OPAM is an innovative web-based resource that maps attitudes to migration across the European Union, drawing on the fullest range of existing relevant data to provide a nuanced understanding of public attitudes to migration. OPAM enables analysis of European, regional, and country-specific trends and issues to explain variation in public attitudes to migration across countries, across time, across different groups of citizens and across the life course within individuals.

The discussion will be followed by a reception.

Participation to the event is upon registration. Given the presence of a large number of distinguished EUI alumni in Brussels, the event will also represent an opportunity to connect with these highly-valued alumni.
